| | | | You can help! - Read stories along with your child and listen carefully to
conversations together; encourage him or her to talk about what you've
read or heard together.
- Encourage your child to tell what might happen next in stories.
- Explore ways to make reading fun by re-reading favorite books or
visiting the library to find books about your child's hobbies and
interests.
- Help your child practice following three-step or four-step directions.
- Help your child practice different kinds of writing, such as
making lists, sending postcards to relatives, copying recipes or
writing directions to simple games. Expect a mix of drawings and
sentences.
- Talk about different jobs and professions and what kind of skills and training are needed to do them.
- Play board games with your child.
- Help your child add and subtract money using real coins and dollars.
- Help your child solve problems using simple math.
- Help your child measure things, such as in making a recipe or doing yard work.
- Display your child's drawings and written work in your home.
- Show your child how to take turns speaking in conversations without interrupting.
- Ask your child to talk about experiences and opinions; ask him or her for details.
When you do these activities, you help your child do well in reading, writing, and math-and in other subjects, too!
