Welcome back to our 2009-10 school year! We hope your student enjoyed receiving his/her teacher’s letter of introduction in our August mailing to families. In addition, please plan on taking part in our “Meet The Teacher” event on Thursday, September 3, 4:30-6:00 pm. It’s a great opportunity to greet your student’s teacher, visit their classroom, and drop off school supplies. If you have any questions about transportation, please ask in the office. We’re also looking forward to our “Back to School” nights, which will be an opportunity for parents to learn more about what their students will be learning in school this year. Each grade level will host their own “Back to School” night according to the following schedule. All grade levels meet from 6:00-7:00 pm, with the exception of Kindergarten, which meets from 4:30-5:30 pm. Please mark your calendars! Sept. 10 - Gr 4 Sept. 16 - Gr 6 Sept. 17 – K and Gr 5 Sept. 21 - Gr 2 Sept. 23 – Gr 1 Sept. 24 – Gr 3 We’ve added new staff in several positions, including teachers in K, grades 2 & 4, our science and art specialists, and school nurse. You’ll see photos of our entire staff in the display case outside of the office. Thanks to our fabulous PTO for donating the display case! In terms of new programming, our grades 3-6 will take part in a math block, which will be an 80-minute time period in the afternoon that will allow us to better meet the individual math needs of our students. We will also be using a new district-wide English literacy program in grades 2-5 that comes highly recommended and is research-based. Throughout the fall, a committee of staff members will also be recommending the purchase of new Spanish literacy materials. The new curriculum is funded in part by our district’s federal stimulus dollars. We’ll also be using a new literacy assessment tool that will help us better determine which teaching strategies to use to best support our emerging readers. According to our MCA II scores, we did not make adequate yearly progress (AYP) in the area of reading in one subgroup, thus these interventions are timely and essential to the continued academic growth of our students. However, our school did make adequate yearly progress in the area of math. Another area of emphasis for us this school year will be bully prevention and awareness. To kick off our efforts, during the first two weeks of school administrators will meet individually with classes to discuss expectations for student behavior in the classroom, on the bus, in the hallway, at lunch and out at recess. We ask that every parent talk to their child about the devastating effects of name-calling, teasing, and intentionally isolating other students. If we truly intend on helping our students to treat each other with kindness and respect, we will need to continue the strong partnership between home and school, and consistently model the behaviors that we expect from our students. Due to a need for additional classroom space, we have two portables that will be used for our vocal music and science specialist classes. In addition, you’ll want to check out the colorful new tile in our 3rd floor hallway. You’ll also notice us going out to recess before eating our lunch. Statistics show that students tend to waste less food, behave better on the playground, eat at a more leisurely pace, consume food with more nutrients, and are more ready to learn upon returning to the classroom immediately after lunch. If it fits into your schedule and you are interested in volunteering during the recess/lunch period, please give the office a call. We would like to encourage you to become a member of our Site Council and/or Parent Teacher Organization. We value your input and appreciate your time and efforts as volunteers in our school. In closing, we would like to honor the teaching career of Señora Denise Anderson, former 5th grade teacher, who passed away suddenly at the end of the last school year. We remember her contagious smile, her positive nature, and her love of teaching. Esperamos que su estudiante haya disfrutado al recibir la carta del maestro/a en el correo de Agosto a las familias. Además les invitamos a participar en el evento para "Conocer al Maestro/a" el jueves, 3 de septiembre, 4:30-6:00 pm. Es una buena oportunidad para saludar a sus maestros/as, visitar sus clases y traer sus materiales escolares. Si tiene una pregunta sobre el bus, por favor pregunte en la oficina. También estamos esperando las noches "De vuelta a la Escuela" lo cual será una oportunidad para los padres aprender más sobre lo que los estudiantes aprenderán este año escolar. Cada grado tendrá su propia noche "De vuelta a la Escuela" basado en el siguiente horario. En cuanto a nuestro programa académico, los grados 3-6 tendrán un bloque de matemáticas que consistirá de un período de 80 minutos diarios en la tarde y nos permitirá llenar las necesidades académicas en el área de matemáticas de nuestros estudiantes. Además, estaremos usando un program nuevo de Artes del Lenguaje en inglés en los grados 2-5 que viene altamente recomendado y esta basado en estudios profesionales. Durante el otoño, un comité de nuestra facultad estudiará y recomendará la adquisición de materiales de Artes del Lenguaje en español. El nuevo currículo está financiado en parte por los dólares federales de estímulo del distrito. También emplearemos una prueba de evaluación nueva que nos ayudará a determinar que estrategias pedagógicas usar para apoyar a los lectores emergentes. Según los resultados del examen MCA II, demostraron que no llenamos los requisitos del progreso académico anual (AYP) en el area de lectura en uno de los subgrupos de estudiantes, o sea que las nuevas intervenciones llegan a tiempo y serán esenciales para el progreso académico continuo de nuestros estudiantes. Sin embargo, nuestra escuela lleno los requisitos del progreso académico anual en el área de matemáticas. Otra area en la que pondremos énfasis este año escolar será la prevención de la intimidación. Para iniciar los esfuerzos en este tema, las administradoras de la escuela se reunirán individualmente con cada clase para discutir las expectativas del comportamiento de los estudiantes en el aula, en el bus, en los pasillos, durante el almuerzo y el recreo. Les pedimos a los padres que hablen con sus hijos sobre el efecto desvastador de insultar a los demás, de molestarlos o aislar intencionalmente a otros estudiantes. Si verdaderamente intentamos ayudar a nuestros estudiantes a tratarse con amabilidad y respeto, necesitaremos mantener un lazo fuerte entre el hogar y la escuela y modelar consistentemente los comportamientos que esperamos de nuestros estudiantes. Debido a la necesidad de espacio adicional, tenemos dos aulas portátiles que se utilizarán para las clases de música y ciencia. También, los invitamos a que vengan al 3er piso a chequear los nuevos colores del pasillo. Como notarán, este año iremos al recreo antes del almuerzo. Las estadísticas muestran que los estudiantes tienden a botar menos comida, comportarse mejor en el recreo, comer relajadamente, consumir comida con más nutrientes y están más listos para aprender, al volver a la clase inmediatamente después del almuerzo. Si tiene tiempo y usted está interesado/a en ser voluntario durante el recreo/período de almuerzo, por favor llame a la oficina. Queremos animarlos para que participen en el Consejo Escolar y/o en la Organización de Padres y Maestros. Valoramos sus contribuciones y apreciamos el tiempo y esfuerzo como voluntarios en nuestra escuela. Para terminar, nos gustaría hacer homenaje a la carrera educativa de la Señora Denise Anderson, maestra de 5to grado, quien falleció repentinamente al final del año escolar pasado.
