Reading and Writing
At the end of second grade, your child should be able to:
  • Show that he or she can use reading to get information or for enjoyment.
  • Read at least 25 books for information or entertainment, talk about them, and retell them in his or her own words.
  • Share personal experiences that connect to a story he or she read.
  • Write a story with a beginning, middle and ending.
  • Follow directions that have three steps.
  • Use details and examples when speaking.
  • Check his or her work for spelling, grammar and punctuation.
  • Tell the difference between fact and fantasy, as well as fact and fiction.
