INFORMACION DE LA ADMINISTRACION Dear Parents/Guardians, In November you will have an opportunity to come to school and discuss your child’s progress at Parent-Teacher Conferences. Daytime conferences are on Friday, November 13. Evening conferences are from 4:30-7:30 PM on November 12 and 17. We encourage and expect all of our families to participate. Your child’s success depends on your support and dedication to their learning. Partnering with parents is one of the most effective ways for us to increase student achievement. If you have time, please feel free to stop by the office to introduce yourself or to say hi while you are at school for your child’s conference. We look forward to seeing you. In celebration of Parent Involvement Month (which was in October), we would like to stress the important role that our families play in our learning community. Examples include: talking to your student regularly about what he/she is learning in school; assisting your student in planning a daily schedule that promotes quality completion of homework/projects; helping to process Geckler orders for our all-school fundraiser; volunteering in your student’s classroom(s); going on a fieldtrip; driving an intern to an event; attending a PTO meeting; helping out at the Harvest Festival or assisting in organizing a grade level dinner; making sure that your student practices reading everyday…and the list of opportunities goes on and on. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being involved in the life of your student and our school. Our 4th graders are participating in the VocalEssence educational program ¡Cantaré! ¡Cantaré! which links a Mexican composer, Jesús Lopez, with our students through a residency whose purpose is to create a deeper understanding of the rich Mexican classical musical heritage. From October 5-9, Mr. López who is the principal organist at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico and an accomplished choral composer, explored Mexican cultural and choral music traditions with our 4th graders. Over the fall, Jesús will return to Mexico to write new compositions, which students will begin learning in January in their music class. Mr. López will return for a two-week residency in March to help students in their rehearsals. In May, he will come for one final week to refine the performances, which students will perform at the VocalEssence ¡Cantaré! Community Concert at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis on the evening of Tues, May 25. (Como Park High School is the other SPPS School involved in this wonderful program). Each grade level will be invited to get together for a “Grade Level Dinner.” Please note that Kinder and 1st grade hosted their dinners in October; grades 2, 3, & 4 will be in November; and grades 5 & 6 will be in December. The event takes place after school and is a time to share a meal as well as get to know the students, families and staff members at your grade level. While it is an opportunity to relax and enjoy the company of others, often times there is also an informal activity associated with the gathering. At each grade level, there are several parents and a staff member who assist in coordinating volunteers to help in the planning. If you would like to help, please call the office and leave your name and phone number. Please consider attending your student’s “Grade Level Dinner.” It is a great way to support our learning community by strengthening school and community relationships. Here are a few quick announcements: -Welcome to our new band director, Jeff Fulton. We will miss Phil Fried, who has accepted a different position in the District. -Congrats to everyone at Adams for receiving an SPPS District Recycling Certificate for the 2008-09 school year (it means that we increased our recycling pounds by a minimum of 19%)!!! -We’ve been interviewing students about having recess before lunch, and their feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Students feel that they are better able to concentrate on eating a good lunch. -Many thanks to Nicole Tschohl, our building coach, who is mentoring students from Adams who are taking part in GEM (Girls Excited about Math) at the University of MN. Our students will attend the program with girls from all over the Twin Cities on four Saturdays between October-March to spend time having fun with math. -We are looking for volunteers to coach another Destination Imagination Team. Currently we have one 4th grade team organized and ready to go! Destination Imagination is a program that promotes creative problem solving in grades K-college aged learners through unique hands-on experiences. The ultimate goal is to teach participants that through their creativity, teamwork, and perseverance, they can develop creative solutions to complex problems completely on their own. Teams of up to 7 members work together to solve one of six different challenges, which they perform at a tournament in March. If you are interested, please call the office. -Capital bonding projects that have been approved by the District for our school include: paving an additional parking area; private toilets for all kinder classrooms; Smartboards for two classrooms; and improvements in our mechanical/phone systems. Projects will be completed later this school year and into the summer. In closing, now that the painting of the inside of our school is nearing completion, you might have noticed new signs going up around the building that say “Respect, Responsibility, and Safety” in Spanish. As we continue to talk to our students about bully prevention awareness, please join us by sharing ideas with your student about what it means to be respectful, responsible and safe at school. Judy Kaufmann, Directora Claudia Baldwin, Sub Directora NOTICIAS DE ADAMS 5th/6th Grade News Sra.
