COMPUTERS
Adams has thirty new eMacs in the computer lab and a full time bilingual computer specialist. Adams
teaches basic computing skills like word processing, spreadsheets,
graphing, databases, draw and paint programs and keyboarding. More
advanced skills like using visual thinking tools, preparing slide
shows, working with digital images, making WebPages, developing a movie with iMovie and writing a book
are also part of the curriculum. The Internet is also accessed as a source of knowledge with parent permission.
LIBRARY
The Adams library is one of the best Spanish Immersion school libraries in the United States. There are over 10,000 books and other items, over half of them in Spanish. Adams
has a part time librarian and is one of just a few schools in the
district to win a Library Excellence and Equity Program (LEEP) grant as
a model program. The remodeled space features a computer-writing center. The library is open weekly during the summer for students and parents.
SPECIAL EDUCATION FOR DIFFERING NEEDS
Special education services are offered in English, with accommodations made for the Spanish learning environment. Adams
has 1.5 learning disability teachers, a part time nurse, speech
language pathologist, social worker and occupational therapist. Adams also has an itinerant physical therapist, deaf-hard of hearing teacher, and school psychologist. These team members work together to ensure appropriate services for students with differing needs.
ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS (ELL) / LATINO CONSENT DECREE (LCD)
Five full time teachers provide services for English Language Learners and Latino Consent Decree. Adams also has a Home School liaison educational assistant for Latino families.
SCHOOL-WIDE ENRICHMENT MODEL (SEM)
The
School-wide Enrichment Model at Adams focuses on enriching the learning
of all students and offers challenging academic environments in the
regular and SEM classroom. Enrichment
classes, accelerated learning, compacted curriculum and extended
learning opportunities are available in all subject areas and tailored
to meet the needs of individual students. Students are identified for these services through one or a combination of the following: MAT scores, teacher recommendations, above average ability, creativity and task commitment. The
overall goal of the program is to provide opportunities, resources and
encouragement to support continuous high-level learning.
