Memoir Unit Sixth Grade We are presently planting "seeds" in our journals by writing reactions to mentor texts that I read to the class. Students also analyze authors' craft using structure, style, and methods which they use in their writing. We have highlighted "Golden Lines," and other figurative language, in the authors' pieces as well as our own. Students will read memoirs in a literature circle format and will eventually write their own memoir. More specific information will be sent home in a letter the week of September 14, 2009.

Data Analysis This week we formed our mathematics blocks and students began Unit 1 of Everyday Mathematics entitled, "Data Analysis." We will begin by studying ways to help us organize data, for example using line plots (diagramas de puntos), stem and leaf plots (tablas de tallos y hojas), and counting methods (métodos de conteo). After these we will study different ways to display the information using graphs such as bar graphs, line graphs, and circle graphs. As well we will us the benchmarks (hitos) of mean (media/promedio), mode (moda), median (mediana) and range (rango) to help us analyze the information. Data will be from information provided by students or provided by the text. Please press the title "Data Analysis" to see the homework. |
